Murli Manohar Joshi Declares Sanatan as the Only Religion, Calls for Protection of Shankaracharya's Birthplace

Murli Manohar Joshi made a series of significant statements on Sanatan, history, education, language, and cultural heritage. He described Sanatan as the world's only and oldest religion, questioned earlier historical narratives, defended Urdu as an Indian language, referred to the Saraswati River, and called for preserving the birthplace of Adi Shankaracharya.

Former Union Minister Murli Manohar Joshi has made a series of strong statements on religion, history, education, language, and cultural heritage, asserting that Sanatan is the only religion and describing it as the world's oldest faith. His remarks also included claims regarding historical narratives, the Saraswati River, the Urdu language, and the birthplace of Adi Shankaracharya.

Speaking on the subject of religion, Joshi said that there is only one religion in the world, which is Sanatan, and that no other religion exists in the true sense. He stated that Sanatan is the oldest religion in the world and emphasized its historical and cultural significance.

Referring to historical education, Joshi said that there were several inaccuracies in earlier versions of history. He claimed that students were taught that the Vedas endorsed the consumption of meat and that the Aryans had migrated from outside India. He said that after the government led by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee came to power, he was entrusted with the responsibility of the Ministry of Education, during which efforts were made to address such historical interpretations.

Joshi further said that his tenure witnessed the presentation of evidence relating to the Saraswati River. He also asserted that Urdu is a language of India and did not originate from outside the country. According to him, during the tenure of his government, there was a desire that Muslims should read the Quran in Urdu instead of Arabic.

Highlighting cultural connections, Joshi pointed out that both the national anthem of Bangladesh and the national anthem of India were written by Rabindranath Tagore. He presented this as an example of the shared literary and cultural legacy associated with the region.

Addressing the condition of Adi Shankaracharya's birthplace, Joshi claimed that Hindus no longer have places to live in the village associated with Shankaracharya and alleged that the properties are owned by Christians. He appealed to the country's business community to purchase the land in the area. Drawing comparisons with Mecca and the Vatican, he said that people belonging to other faiths cannot reside in those places and argued that a similar situation should exist in the village of Shankaracharya.
